Health care is changing rapidly, and our workforce wants to grow and evolve along with it. That’s why National Workforce Planning and Development is hosting the first Workforce Development Week, October 19 to 22. This virtual event, open to all Kaiser Permanente employees, will connect you with resources to build your career and adapt to changes in the health care industry. Hear from featured speakers and career experts. Get engaged and explore activities to keep learning.

Kerry Dean Portrait

Kerry Dean

Public Health Nurse, Southern California

Kerry Dean is the hospice liaison for the San Bernardino service area in Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California Region. She began her career at KP as an LVN then used the resources provided by the Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust to earn her RN and BSN and MSN degrees. Kerry is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in public health. She’s a member of UNAC/UHCP.

Sadao Nakachi Portrait

Sadao Nakachi

Emergency Room Registered Nurse, Southern California

At 17, Sadao Nakachi, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, with his parents’ resounding support. After a distinguished military career, Sadao continues to serve by working at Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center in Southern California, as an emergency room nurse during COVID-19. Sadao used the Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust to earn his BSN, a Foundation in Design Thinking certificate, and holds a Master of Business for Veterans degree from USC Marshall School of Business. Sadao is a member of UNAC/UHCP and has helped more than 30 members earn their advanced degrees at no cost to Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust participants.

Clinical Assistant, Mid-Atlantic States

Crystal Muir is a clinical assistant in Internal Medicine at Kaiser Permanente’s Springfield, Virginia, medical center in the Mid-Atlantic States Region. She is using a stipend from the Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust to study to become a registered nurse. Crystal intends to continue her education and earn a BSN. She is currently a member of OPEIU Local 2.

Medical Assistant, Northern California

Eula Smith is a medical assistant in the Family Medicine Department at Kaiser Permanente’s Mission Bay medical offices in the Northern California Region. She used to be a shuttle bus driver at the facility, but her department was outsourced in October 2018. Faced with the choice between a severance package, getting a new job or going to school, Eula picked school. Now that she’s been an MA for a bit over a year, Eula says she wants to continue her education and earn her LVN license.

Laboratory Technician, Colorado

Ingris Solares is a medical lab technician at the Hidden Lake Medical Offices in Kaiser Permanente’s Colorado Region. She began her career at KP as a phlebotomist before taking part in an apprenticeship program to get trained in her current field. She intends to get more education to become a clinical lab scientist. Ingris is a member of SEIU Local 105.

Certified Dental Assistant, Northwest

Kayla Stevens began working at Kaiser Permanente Northwest when she was 18 years old in the Environmental Services Department. She left to work in retail but quickly soured on the low pay and unfair conditions. Kayla came back to KP after a few years, this time as a dental aide. Thanks to the Ed Fund, she is now a certified dental assistant at the Oregon City dental office, where she is a member of SEIU Local 49 and her manager is Kerrin Watkins.

Jenevive Sandoval

Jenevive Sandoval

Project Manager, Workforce Planning and Development, Southern California

Jenevive Sandoval is a project manager for workforce planning and development in Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California Region. Her first job at KP was as a temporary administrative assistant because she wasn’t looking to make a career at the organization. That was in 2011. Since then, she’s worked in areas such as attendance, disability management and recruitment. Jenevive earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology at UC Irvine and aims to get a master’s degree in health administration, public health or business.

Director, Specialty Care Operations, Georgia

Philidah Seda is the director of specialty care in Kaiser Permanente’s Georgia Region, overseeing Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has been a nurse for 26 years. Her career has taken her to the American South to Abu Dhabi and back. Not only does she encourage her staff to use workforce development resources, but she herself is studying for her doctoral degree now.

Kerrin Watkins

Manager, Dental Office, Northwest

Kerrin Watkins manages the dental office in Oregon City, Oregon, in Kaiser Permanente’s Northwest Region. When she was a mass communications major at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, she wanted to be, in her words, “the next Katie Couric.” Family lured her back to her home state of Oregon, where she began her KP career in the dental staffing office and a member of SEIU Local 49.

Growing up in Louisiana, Sophia Wilson was raised to be, in her words, “a good Southern lady.” But she knew that wasn’t for her. She moved to Georgia, got a degree in accounting, and today is the supervisor of Medical Records Administration in Kaiser Permanente’s Georgia Region.

After several years in the energy and automotive sectors, Michael D. Brown took a risk and made the switch to health care. He specifically pursued opportunities at Kaiser Permanente because it is a large organization – providing a variety of opportunities for growth – and has a proven commitment to diversity. Today, Michael is the vice president of Human Resources in Kaiser Permanente’s Georgia Region after serving as senior director of HR, employee and labor relations the Mid-Atlantic States Region. Michael has a B.A. from Michigan State University and a J.D. from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law. He sharpened his skills at the Executive Leadership Program at Harvard Business School.

Katrina Brown

Optometric Assistant, Mid-Atlantic States

Katrina Brown has worked at Kaiser Permanente for 11 years. An OPEIU Local 2 member, she currently serves in the Total Health role and as a tri-chair member of the Mid-Atlantic States Regional Healthy Workforce Committee and has served as a vision services assistant. Katrina also is a Caribbean and African dance fitness instructor and advocate for wellness, self-care and mental health. She has a bachelor’s degree in health management from Howard University and ophthalmic assistant certification from Georgetown University, both in Washington, D.C.
